Just a few days until such time as Albese con Cassano (Como, Northern Italy) will host the Mediofondo 20th edition on Sunday, July 15, 2018 to honor the local champ Fabio Casartelli. Almost 23 years have passed since that tragic July 18, 1995 when the Olympic gold medallist in Barcellona 1992 died during the Tour de France 15th stage because of a fatal crash on the Col de Portet d’Aspet downhill.
A whole community will remember a great athlete but also a beloved man remembered for his kindness. Among them, the 50-year-old local runner Stefano Molteni decided to celebrate Fabio in a special way, will run on foot on by running the 114 km of long route including the two “Tour of Lombardia” iconic climbs, the Bellagio-Ghisallo and the Wall of Sormano. He will move on Saturday before the race and will come on the finish line together with athletes and families on the event’s day.
“It is my pleasure and honour to run in memory of Fabio with a special dedication to his relatives and to the Fabio Casartelli Foundation. About the race, my personal goal is to reach the finish line before the last rider. It’s not going to be easy, the long route is extremely challenging”, said Molteni.
